January 26th, 2010 Right now it's hard to believe that we'll ever see the end of winter, but planning for spring goes on. Check February's newsletter for proposed dates for our mini-clinics in Equine First Aid & Bandaging, Basic (human) First Aid Certification, Starting Your Young Horse and Horse Owner's Basic Hoof Care & Maintenance. In addition, the details are currently being coordinated for the Equine Canada Rider Level Testing and we hope to have proposed dates for that event within the next couple of weeks. Big 105 Halloween Contest Winner October 19th, 2009 Shanna & Quatro won 105.5's Halloween Costume Contest with their portrayal of Raggedy Ann & Andy at A Games Day here at WestPlay - check out the pic that won on the radio station's website. Congratulations Shanna! Kate & Hally open a Greenhawk! October 19th, 2009 Congratulations to our friends Hally & Kate Fair who have opened a new Greenhawk in Red Deer! Emerald Equestrian Show October 05th, 2009 It was the coldest, most miserable weather imaginable! In spite of that, all the horses were on their best behavior and the riders were on their game even with extremities going numb as they rode. Everyone did WestPlay proud, and there were lots of comments on how good our riders were and how lovely their young horses - congratulations to all, you made a great impression above & beyond the ribbons you all won! All four horses, including Quinn going to her first show, hopped right on the trailer both going & coming back and all four took the show atmosphere in a calm matter-of-fact manner. Gracie has found a person of her very own! September 27th, 2009 Congratulations to Michelle Underwood - she's entered a 'State of Grace'! She and this gorgeous 3 yr. old thoroughbred filly are well suited to each other as both are calm and thoughtful. Gracie is reveling in having ALL the attention to herself and adores Michelle! AHHS Year End Show September 21st, 2009 Tara Heppell has supplied some great shots from the labour day weekend show at Westerner Park in Red Deer. Check out the ribbons won by both Shanna with Hope and Tara with Duchess! Both riders have worked exceptionally hard this summer with their green Cache In babies and the results are amazing - these horse & rider combinations just keep getting better & better! (Clicking on image brings up larger view) Show News July 24th, 2009 The WestPlay riders are enjoying a busy show season! These committed equestrians have been working hard with their green horses and all are improving by leaps & bounds. Next on the agenda are the Hunter Show at Alhambra Stables July 26th and then MJ Farms AHHS Show in August. Killerney Schooling Show March 23rd, 2009 It seems you always forget something when you go to a show! This time, after driving through a blizzard to get there, we arrived in Devon with every piece of tack & equipment we needed - only to find the show had been canceled. Our "Morning of the Show" list now has a new #1: Call to make sure the show is happening! All went well anyway as Kathleen graciously offered us full use of the arena & course to school Sally & Jet - which was the point of hauling to a schooling show in the first place. To top it all off, Liz was awarded the bottle of Baileys intended as a horse show prize due to her skill in coping with Sally's rodeo exhibition! Our thanks to Gwen, who was so proactive in making sure we had enough food for the day that she's now WestPlay's Honorary Horse Show Mother. We've Cached In!!! February 24th, 2009 We're sooo excited to announce that Cache In is now here!!! Cache will be standing at stud at WestPlay this season....watch for details! (Clicking on image brings up larger view) It was a Valentine February 14th, 2009 Michelle Underwood had a Valentine's surprise waiting for her at the barn today - husband Trevor had secretly bought her the lovely Cache In mare One For The Money! The pair has had several rides together over the past couple of weeks and get along beautifully. Congratulations to Michelle, and to "Babe" - we couldn't ask for a better home. (Clicking on image brings up larger view) WestPlay Jacket Winner! January 05th, 2009 Michelle Underwood was the winner of our Volunteer Appreciation Draw and can now sport a WestPlay jacket. Michelle's name was drawn on December 30th from our draw box into which each volunteer is entered every time they come out & lend a hand. Although there was only one Draw Winner, we look forward to thanking all our 2008 Volunteers with our much-delayed (due to horrid weather) year end party in the near future. (Clicking on image brings up larger view) 2008 Volunteer Appreciation Draw December 23rd, 2008 We greatly appreciate all the help our dedicated Volunteers have offered over the past year and have been entering each volunteer into our award draw each time they come out. We'd hoped for better weather to have a year end PARTY and draw, but will have to settle for making the draw for a WestPlay Park jacket on December 30th. We'll schedule the bonfire & bash for a later date when temperature forecasts are better! Check back - the Prizewinner will be announced here following the draw. Merry Christmas! December 23rd, 2008 Thanks to all of our WestPlay family & friends for making 2008 such a success and so much fun! We're looking forward to an even better 2009. With the "deep freeze" weather we've been having, there's nothing to do but kick back & really enjoy the Christmas season - so have a GREAT Christmas! (Clicking on image brings up larger view) A new partnership:Tara & Siren December 23rd, 2008 Congratulations to Tara Burton & her parents on the recent addition of Sechelt(Siren) to their family! This lovely mare has found a wonderful home and she and Tara are headed to the hunter ring in 2009, beginning with the Baby Green division. Both horse & rider are talented and willing to work hard, so we won't be surprised to see them excel together. (Clicking on image brings up larger view) Gwen has met her Destiny! November 13th, 2008 Congratulations go to Gwen Moore on the purchase of her thoroughbred mare "Date With Destiny"! This lovely, laid back mare is sure to be a fantastic partner for Gwen. Whether helping out with the games, manning the haunted forest, bringing homemade Halloween treats or all of the above, as always it's the volunteers who really make things rock. October 26th, 2008 WestPlay welcomes a new Doberman into the family - 7 week old "Danger" (aka His Royal Puppiness or Sir Poops-a-lot) He'll soon go in to have his ears cropped, and then he'll begin to look more like a Doberman - meanwhile he's all floppy ears, big paws & personality plus! August 06th, 2008 Congratulations to Shanna Underwood, Quatro's new owner, and to Quatro on finding such a wonderful home! They've been partnered at WestPlay for a couple of months and having a hoot together, so now it's official: Quatro has a girl of his own. August 01st, 2008 Alexis & her family have just purchased Pikture Perfect (Coco)and the pair are training full time for the Hunter ring. With Alexis' continued commitment & hard work they'll be ready to show in no time! Coco's thriving under Alexis' care & loves to be the focus of so much attention! (Clicking on image brings up larger view) June 15th Games Day June 15th, 2008 Great weather arrived just in time making for a fantastic day! Everyone had fun & everything went smoothly except for the "Beetle Incident" which almost changed the Family-rated event into something a little more R-rated... Congratulations to Shanna, who won the "Best Groomed Horse" award with Quatro - the care & attention she takes certainly show. Congratulations also to Hannah and Morgan who share the award for "Outstanding Sportsmanship" - both were generous in helping their fellow participants as needed. Thank you so much to all our volunteers - there's no way we could do it without you: the kids who participate appreciate you as much as we do! He was FINALLY born May 25th to our Police Car daughter Burn The Bog, and is by the exceptional thoroughbred stallion Katahaula County. With proven jumpers on both sides, we're excited to see how he grows up. May 24th, 2008 Boogie (Burn The Bog) is now two weeks overdue. She's GINORMOUS & looks ready to pop out a yearling....but only when she's good & ready apparently. Countdown to the new foal April 29th, 2008 Our thoroughbred mare, BURN THE BOG, is due to foal on May 10th and is beginning to look really, really ready! We're very excited because "Boogie" is one of the last remaining POLICE CAR daughters, and having ridden several POLICE CAR offspring in the jumper ring we know they have what it takes. She is in foal to the thoroughbred stallion KATAHAULA COUNTY, who is exceptionally athletic and prepotent, siring 20% stakes winners as well as some very nice hunters & jumpers. Both mom & dad are well put together, athletic & good minded, so we're looking forward to this foal in a big way! Frank Madden at The Mane Event April 28th, 2008 WestPlay was fortunate enough to be involved with the Frank Madden clinics at The Mane Event this weekend - what an opportunity! If you ever have the chance to ride in or audit one of his clinics you won't be disappointed. Although used to working with horses & riders at the very upper echelon of International Showjumping, he was both gracious and meticulous in imparting some of his training techniques and the reasoning for his exercises to our local riders. He was positive and very willing to work with the individual strengths & weaknesses of each individual horse & rider. This was a fantastic series of clinics to be involved with, and to have a Coach/Trainer of his caliber also be easy to work with was a bonus! Our new Mascot! April 15th, 2008 Check out Howie, our smallest Pot-belly piglet, snuggling on top of the barbados ram! We're going to get him a little jacket that says "WestPlay Pig". (Clicking on image brings up larger view) Name the Animal Contest April 09th, 2008 In preparation for our 2008 Summer Camp Program, we've added some new four footed friends to the menagerie! Still in need of names are a male alpaca, a male and a female pot-belly pig and a Barbados ram. Watch for pictures over the next couple of days & email your name suggestions to us - you could win a WestPlay Park T-shirt or ball cap! Summer is on the way March 01st, 2008 As of March 1st, our Summer Camp Program is 50% full! I guess I'm not the only one already looking forward to the long hot days. Between the Camps and our show schedule, we're going to have a great summer here at WestPlay - busy & fun! February 23rd Schooling Show February 01st, 2008 WestPlay is hosting a schooling show on February 23rd at the Caluori Pavillion in Olds - this is a great opportunity to get those "greenies" out & about without the expense of the bigger venues in Edmonton & Calgary. Congratulations to Dyllan Lough & River Raider February 01st, 2008 River Raider (Gus) has found a show home with Dyllan at Paramount Stables in Calgary, and Dyllan has found a talented horse with a great mind: We're pleased for both of them! Kathleen Chomik and Julie Johnston are combining their areas of expertise to offer an event with something for everyone... Saturday is Hunter/Jumper day with lots of schooling level classes for the "greenies", while Sunday is Open Show with Gymkhana Events and additional Fun Classes like the Toilet Paper Race & Musical Tires! Both days kick off with a pancake breakfast featuring berry-topped pancakes, and with the bumper crop it looks like we're in store for there may be lots of "U-Pick" berries left. So, come as a participant, a spectator or a berry picker - we'll see you there! Baby Pictures June 27th, 2007 Check out these hot babes! "Summer", our Whirlwind II filly is now 2 weeks old & "Roxy" (pictured on the right), our Cache In filly born the end of March is 2 1/2 months old. (Clicking on image brings up larger view) Meet our new Coach! June 21st, 2007 WestPlay is pleased to welcome Kathleen Chomik as our Western Riding Coach. Kathleen has been working with a private clientele and is now ready to expand her service through partnership with WestPlay Park. She brings a wealth of experience to WestPlay, including 15 years training though Equine Canada with successful completion of both the Western Rider Levels 1- 4 Program and the Learn to Teach Program. Kathleen is currently completing the Equine Canada Level 1 Western Coaching Certification process. Her additional qualifications include: NCCP Level 1 and First Aid & CPR C Certification. She excels at developing customized programs to suit your individual goals; groundwork, theory and riding components are included to encourage the development of well rounded horsepeople. In addition to Western Riding Ringwork, Kathleen enjoys offering Instructional Trail Rides and Gymkhana training. New Baby! June 20th, 2007 A lovely chestnut filly by Whirlwind II arrived early June 12th. First time mom Pikture Perfect is proving herself a doting & protective mother, and both are happy and healthy. Check back for pictures. Awaiting another arrival! May 28th, 2007 Canadian Warmblood mare Pikture Perfect is expecting her first foal in June. We are anxiously awaiting the birth of this baby sired by the spectacular young stallion Whirlwind II ! Sandy Alexander Clinic April 08th, 2007 Take The Cache (Sallymander) and her rider, Laura Thompson enjoyed a very successful clinic with Sandy Alexander this weekend in Olds. Laura did a wonderful job as usual, and Sallymander had the time of her life! Sandy's emphasis on the basics to achieve precision and accuracy are invaluable in bringing along a young horse to it's full potential. We look forward to welcoming Sandy's expertise to WestPlay Park clinics in the future.
